It was indeed a very dark day in the world of heavy metal when it was learned that Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister of Motorhead had passed away. His death was a shock but quite expected as Lemmy had lived the rock and roll lifestyle for decades and throughout 2015 it seemed to be catching up with him. He had been sick for quite a few years and those who had seen him in recent photos and in concert said he was barely recognizable. He appeared frail and thin and no one knew – including himself – that he was suffering from cancer. In fact he was diagnosed only a few days before his death and quietly died at home. Instead of an extended block of Motorhead, I decided to pick out songs that feature the man outside of the band.
Did you know that Lemmy was Jimi Hendrix’s roadie before he started playing in bands? One of them was Hawkwind, and the extended set kicked off with their only hit single, “Silver Machine”, which Lemmy sang lead. He was kicked out of the band in 1975 and formed Motorhead!
“Please Don’t Touch” was originally released as a vinyl EP called “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” under the name Motor Headgirl School – a combination of bands Motorhead and Girlschool. Both bands remained good friends and Lemmy dated both guitarist Kelly Johnson and bassist Gil Weston… at different times of course. “Lemmy’s version of “Back In The USSR” is from the album “Butchering The Beatles” and he sand lead on “Doctor Alibi” from Slash’s self-titled album.
Later in the show was “Rockin All Over The World” by Status Quo to honor Rick Parfitt, the band's long-time guitar player who passed away over the past week as well. While his band were not very big in America, they have had over 60 chart hits in the UK, more than any other rock band and have now sold approximately 118 million records worldwide.
Last song of the night was the wonderful ballad, “This Is Your Life”, by Ronnie James Dio. As we recall 2016 as a year of loss, his sentiment echoes the thought that life is just “starlight” and to make the short time you have magical… He sure did.
